General Accomplishments

Even though Clark was immensely busy with the different groups and jobs he was given, he also placed serious demands on his time voluntarily by taking on personal projects that continue to impact modern day Huntsville, Texas. He contributed tirelessly to the creation of the Sam Houston Museum and Sam Houston Park and he acquired many of the items currently held in the Thomason Room. His contributions to the local collection make the Clark papers one of the largest conglomeration of Texas artifacts in the state. Another personal project became the expansion of the YMCA into Huntsville.While at Texas Christian University, Clark served as an officer of the local college YMCA and used that experience to found the Sam Houston campus YMCA. Sally, his wife, served as the associate dean for twelve years and took a special interest in college women’s religious and social life.

Huntsville POW Camp

Based on his experience teaching the “War Aims Courses” during World War I, Clark engaged in war propaganda and raised money all over the state of Texas for the Texas for the National War Work Chest. In WWII, Clark was the chairmanship of the committee of the faculty that supervised the Japanese POW camp in Huntsville, Texas. The core of these teachings to the Japanese were American democracy lectures that attempted to teach the them about American democracy. The topic of the lectures was “The American Political System – Its Principles and Developments.
